The coloration of this rainbowfish is hard to describe as it varies greatly! With a basic body color of silvery-blue, the Ornate Rainbow often has a series of horizontal stripes in orange, red, black, and other colors. They also have a bright yellow area right before their double dorsal fin. Finnage coloration is usually a brilliant red or orange, tipped in black (for males). Rainbows are active, peaceful fish that enjoy schooling, so it is best to keep in groups of 4 or more. They will do well in a peaceful community tank, as well as a slightly more aggressive tank. They aren’t too fussy about tank decor but do very well in a planted tank. They will eat a variety of prepared foods including flake, granules, and frozen.
As juveniles, duboisi are dark gray to black with many white speckles all over their body. As they mature, the spots fade and they develop a white to yellow “saddle” over their back. This saddle can vary in color depending on their geographical origin. Tropheus are extremely aggressive with other tropheus. It is best to keep just one in a tank full of other tough Tanganyikans. If you would like to try keeping a few, make sure the tank is very large with plenty of territories. These fish should be fed exclusively vegetable matter. They will pick algae off of rocks and love spirulina flake and wafers. A leaf of romaine or other fresh veggies is also a great treat. Be sure to stick to this diet, and feed meaty foods very rarely; tropheus are infamous for catching Malawi Bloat. These fish are maternal mouthbrooders, meaning the female holds the eggs and fry in her mouth for protection.
