The Huma Huma Trigger is called “humu-humu-nuku-nuku-a-puaa” by native Hawaiians and has recently been reinstated as the Hawaiian state fish. Their bodies have a light base with darker tan shadows on the dorsal half. A brown-black body patch on its sides has several bands extending towards the rear. A yellow-orange band extends from the snout to the gill, and blue and brown stripes through their eyes. Triggerfish are rather aggressive and are best kept with fish of similar size and aggression. Their diet should consist of vitamin-enriched meaty frozen foods, shrimp, snails (shell intact) as well as the occasional live food snack. Most triggers can be very destructive in a reef set up. Triggers from the genera Balistes and Balistoides are generally the most aggressive species while some triggers from the Sufflamen, Melichthys, and Xanthichthys genera are planktivores and can even be successful in some reef aquariums. Care should also be taken to protect equipment like heaters and power cords, as Triggers have been known to bite at some equipment and may cause damage. Also be aware of your own hands in the aquarium – many unwary aquarists have been bitten after they forget to watch their trigger as they clean!

The Teardrop Maxima can come in a variety of colors, one prominent color being gold with hues of tan and brown. It has a teardrop spotting pattern on its mantle. Maxima clams attach themselves to rock and substrate. These clams need high light and good nutrients in order to survive, as well as additional food supplements such as phytoplankton and zooplankton. Clams are wonderful additions to any reef aquaria but do have some requirements that make them more difficult than other inverts to keep. Some research is recommended before purchasing one to find out what species will work the best in your reef aquarium.

Torch corals get their name from the brightly colored tips of their tentacles, which gives the appearance of a lighted torch. These corals are agressive in nature, their tentacles can extend several inches and have a powerful sting that can damage other specimens. For this reason they need to be placed far enough away from other corals so as not to cause damage or death to the other corals. The torch coral must be place upright, tissue can be damaged easily leading to the death of individual heads. Color varies from grey to green with colored tips of brown or green. Polyps are long with a single rounded end, usually extending during the day and retracting somewhat in the evening. This coral should be placed in an area with just enough water movement to gently move the enxtended polyps.
