The Barred Rabbitfish is mostly yellow with a white underside and a scribbled light blue pattern all over. There are two black bars over the eye and behind the gill. Rabbitfish have venomous dorsal and anal spines for protection. They are generally peaceful toward other fish but may be aggressive toward other Rabbitfish. Rabbitfish are timid by nature and will frighten easily, often taking on a mottled brown coloration. They are reef safe with caution as they may nibble on coral polyps if they are not kept well fed. Rabbitfish do best on a diet consisting of live foods, frozen meaty foods, and plenty of greenstuff. They should also have plenty of algae to graze on in between feedings.

Tomato clowns are bright red-orange in color with one white bar at the head. They have a bold personality and are easy to care for. It is usually best to keep one clownfish per tank, though a pair can sometimes be kept if one is significantly smaller (male) than the former (female). As the fish mature, they may also become aggressive towards new arrivals to the tank, so be prepared for aggression to follow even if the new fish is large in size. They aggressively defend thier territory, and may bite if htey feel their area is under threat. Clownfish are generally not fussy eaters, and will accept a range of frozen and prepared foods like flakes, pellets, and frozen formulas. They can benefit from some plant matter in their diet, although they are not considered herbivores. Although the interaction between anemones and clownfish is amusing to watch, it is not necessary to the survival of either animal. Tomato Clowns may bond with Bubble-tip, Long-tentacled, or Carpet Anemones with time.

Carassius auratus is the scientific name of the ancestor of all the types of goldfish that are around today. From this original fish there has been well over 100 goldfish varieties that have been created through selective breeding. Some have stayed true to the carp like body shape while others have developed larger bodies, lost their dorsal fins. have over sized eyes and some have elongated fins. Called the “Flower of the Water” in China, the Oranda is one of the most popular types of goldfish. Orandas are round, deep-bodied goldfish, with its most noticable feature being the large, puffy growth on top of its head. This growth gets larger as the fish ages, sometimes covering their eyes. They also tend to have long, flowing fins. When feeding these fish keep in mind that they will need large amounts of vegetative matter to stay healthy and to avoid buoyancy problems. Generally flake food that is designed for goldfish is sufficient enough to meet their dietary needs. For variety, live plants such as Anacharis or Hornwort can be thrown in to allow the goldfish to naturally graze. As can be derived from their dietary needs, keeping these fish in a planted tank is generally going to be a poor idea if the plants are desired. If feeding floating foods like flakes, soak the food in tank water for a few minutes so it sinks. Goldfish can swallow air from the surface, causing them to swim off-balance.Tankmates for these fish should generally be other goldfish. They will produce large amounts of waste material and can add to the ammonia level in the aquarium which can be very detrimental to other tank inhabitants. If other tank inhabitants are desired extreme care should be taken in choosing them.

The Yellow Tang has a solid bright yellow body and fins. They are highly territorial and should be kept by themselves or in groups of six or more in a large tank. Yellow Tangs are reef safe with caution as they may nibble on coral polyps if they are not kept well fed. Therefore, they should always have a constant supply of macroaglae to graze on between feedings. They tend to not eat microalgae but are happy to eat most marcroalgaes. Yellow tangs will do best on a diet of algae and other greenstuff but will also eat brine shrimp and other small meaty foods in moderation. The Yellow Tang has a solid yellow body and fins. The “scalpel”spine at the base of their tail is white. When Yellow Tangs are highly stressed, a white stripe will appear on their sides. Like other tangs, these fish are herbivores. They need plenty of algae and other greens in their diet to keep them healthy. Without enough algae, their immune systems may be weakened, leaving them vulnerable to parasites like ich. Tangs also may suffer from a condition called Head and Lateral Line Erosion if their diet is poor. Algae can be provided in the form of Spirulina and other algaes in formula foods and pellets, dried marine algae on clips as a frequent treat or through live algae grown in the tank or in a refugium. Tangs are generally community fish and get along with most other tankmates. They do not bother corals and can actually help keep nuisance algae trimmed and under control. Tangs may get territorial and aggressive towards very similar tankmates or tangs from the same genus (Zebrasoma, Acanthurus, Naso etc.); always use caution when keeping these fish together. Yellow Tangs are highly territorial and should either be kept as the only Zebrasoma tang in the aquarium, or in groups of 6 or more in very large aquariums (over 500 gallons).

The Ladder Glider Sleeper Goby is white with light blue markings around the face, and a black tip on the dorsal fin. They are sand sifters, so a soft sand or small-grained gravel is preferred. This fish is best known as part of the group of gobies known as sleeper gobies. They take mouthfuls of the substrate and sift it out through their gills, searching for food. This can help keep the substrate aerated, and may help prevent the build-up of organic debris that leads to high nitrate levels, algae, and cyanobacteria (“Red Slime Algae”). They should be kept in a tank with fine, soft substrate that will not damage their gills as they sift. They will eat a variety of frozen foods and possibly flake and pellet. Gobies prefer a tank with plenty of rocky hiding places. They get along with most tankmates, but can be aggressive toward other gobies. When startled or threatened, they have been known to jump out of uncovered aquariums. Always keep the tank covered and provide plenty of hiding places for this fish to retreat to.

Fire or Red Saddle Clowns range in color from bright orange to deep red. They may have a black patch on the sides of their bodies, and lack the characteristic white markings of most clowns. They are somewhat hardy, but tend to be very sensitive to copper. They are well suited for a reef environment and feed on flake or frozen foods. It is usually best to keep one per tank, though a pair can sometimes be kept if one is significantly smaller (male) than the former (female). As the fish mature, they may also become aggressive towards new arrivals or hands in the tank, so be prepared for aggression to follow even if the new fish is large in size. Clowns can benefit from some plant matter in their diet although they are not considered herbivores, and should have a primarily meaty diet. Tankraised clowns can be more resistant to aquarium diseases like Oodinium that can affect clownfish and other tank residents. Although the interaction between anemones and clownfish is amusing to watch, it is not necessary to the survival of either animal. These clowns may bond with Bubble-tip, Long-tentacled, Carpet, or Sebae Anemones in time.
